Ford Motor Co. is getting a $5.9 million federal loan to help retool its Claycomo assembly plant to produce green vehicles.

The U.S. Department of Energy unveiled June 23 the first infusion of funds to help the nation’s auto manufacturers meet President Barack Obama’s 35-miles-per-gallon goal for passenger car fuel standards.

Ford factories in Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio will also benefit from the loan, according to a Department of Energy press release.

Ford is supposed to use the money to raise fuel efficiency among Focus, Escape, Taurus and F-150 models. This will impact roughly 35,000 employees and 2 million vehicles, according to the Department of Energy.

“This green partnership between Ford and the U.S. government will help accelerate the development of advanced technologies for even better fuel efficiency and emissions,” Ford President Alan Mulally said in a company press release.

A total of $8 million was included as the initial installment of the federal Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program. Nissan North American and Tesla Motors will also get a portion of the money.
