A fire southwest of Kearney destroyed a barn Monday afternoon.

Just after 4:30 p.m. Monday, June 29, the Kearney Fire Protection District received the first of several calls about seeing thick, black smoke off of 144th Street outside of town, according Fire Chief Larry Pratt.

The barn in a field surrounded by trees behind the Williams’ house at 12822 144th St. contained mostly car parts and “average household stuff,” owner Tim Williams said. The black smoke that could be seen for miles was likely caused by automotive paint and car tires.

“When I was coming home from Claycomo I could see it,” said Ann Williams, who also owns the property.

The fire call required a pumper and two tanker trucks, Pratt said. Excelsior Springs and Liberty fire units were on standby to cover any other calls in the Kearney Fire Protection District.
Ann Williams said her nephew was one of those who called in the fire. She said he had been burning trash nearby and thought all of the flames were out. Pratt said there is no official cause of the fire yet.
