It’s funny how things don’t get done when you can live without them really being done. I’ve had a list of at least 20 things that still need to be done around the house that I purchased in August, worked on for three months and moved into in November.
It started on the front of the fridge, right at my eye level, but I think I moved it to the side of the fridge that I never really see once I could no longer handle the guilt it gave me to see nothing get a check mark beside it. The problem started when I jumped the gun and moved into the house what I have realized was a bit too early. You have to understand, the process of me obtaining my own place started early in the summer last year when I decided I would buy a house, so by November, I could not wait any longer. My fiancé — then boyfriend — said, “Don’t move in, because we’ll stop working.” I may have promised him I would finish all of the little lingering projects soon and told him not to worry. Well, I can’t think of one home construction-related thing we’ve done since. Now he says, “I told you not to move in.” He tends to be right quite often. The list includes trim that still needs to be painted, tile that still needs to be grouted, a pantry that still needs shelves, a linen closet that, too, still needs shelves and interior doorways that still need doors. The list goes on and on. They are all things that I can live with, but they are also things that need to be done. I’ve never been a huge procrastinator, I just think I was so tired of spending all of my free time on the house that it felt good to spend a Saturday on the couch rather than with a paintbrush in my hand. I keep waiting for inspiration to strike and that paintbrush to magically end up in my hand. Still, it remains so much easier to stay on the couch. I have not been making excuses for why these things are not getting done because I have no excuses. It is just me giving myself a break from all of the hours I put into the place to bring it to a livable state. Now, as the list remains without any check marks on the dark side of the fridge, I have decided, I will get to it when it gets warm.
