Former Kearney basketball standout has final chance to go dancing David Nurse has had one wish since joining the ranks of college basketball. He wants to go dancing — as in the Big Dance. The former Kearney High School standout wants to be part of the NCAA national championship tournament. Nurse has one final chance to make his wish come true. Nurse and Western Illinois begin their postseason run in The Summit League tournament this weekend in Sioux Falls, S.D. “That’s always the goal each and every season, to play in that tournament, to be a part in March Madness,” Nurse said. “That’s the biggest stage for college basketball. That’s been my goal ever since I became a Division I player, and it is more within reach this year than it’s ever been before.” In his third and final season with Western, Nurse ranks second on the team with a 9.3 points per game average. He has appeared in all 29 games for the Leathernecks this season, making 27 starts. Western, the No. 7 seed in the conference tournament with a record of 13-16 overall and 6-12 in The Summit, will face No. 2-seeded IUPUI, at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, March 6, in the first round. The Leathernecks lost to IUPUI twice during the regular season but came on strong with a four-game win streak near the end of the year, which included a win at Oral Roberts, the third-place team in the league and potential semifinal opponent.
