The Kearney R-1 School District administration gave the Board of Education a budget reduction proposal with three levels of cuts during a work session Thursday, March 4.
“We are choosing what we perceive to be the least impact on students in the classroom,” Superintendent Dr. Bill Nicely told the board. Administrators said they expect — and hope — to just use the level one cuts in the 2010-2011 school year and not have to resort to levels two or three until subsequent years. As a workshop, there was no action taken March 4. Level one calls for cuts in recess aides, textbook purchases, maintenance supplies, five secondary positions (four of which would be from retirements) and professional development among other things, totaling $755,500 in cuts. Athletic Director Eric Marshall also gave a presentation on other districts that use “pay for play” for athletics or activities. Nicely said the administration would take the board members' comments and come back to the next regular meeting with a revised budget reduction proposal. Read more about the board's discussion in the Thursday, March 11, edition of The Kearney Courier.
