There is help for parents trying to navigate the world wide web. The second annual Family University will have workshops to guide parents through cyber safety and social networking. “I think parents have a lot of questions about the Facebook use, cyber safety, texting and cyber bullying,” said Jennifer McNeely, Kearney Middle School counselor and member of Kearney-Holt CAN. The free event open to the public is sponsored by Kearney-Holt CAN – a local group dedicated to healthy lifestyles and positive decisions in the community. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, at Kearney High School, 715 E. 19th St., with a free dinner catered by Updike Barbecue. After announcements at 6 p.m. the first session begins at 6:15 p.m. and the second session at 7:05 p.m. The event is expected to conclude by 7:50 p.m. In addition to Internet-related workshops for parents, there will also be workshops on parenting with love and logic, destructive decisions by teenagers and how to talk to your child about sex. “I hope they become more aware of resources in their community and make connections with other families,” McNeely said. For seventh through 12th grade students, there will be workshops on leadership and media literacy. About 70 people attended the event last year. “It is to educate the parents about current issues,” said Laura Bruce of the Northland Coalition, of which Kearney-Holt CAN is a member. Bruce said they looked for needs in the community.
