To celebrate National Trail Day on Saturday, June 5, at Smithville Lake, trail users at the Smoke & Davey Trailhead will be in for a special treat from 8 a.m. till noon. Live snakes, natural features of the trail and trail system expansion, and a display of the native grassland restoration project are in store for participants, according to a press release.
Other agencies will be present to discuss the health benefits of trails and address safety issues. Representatives from the Smithville Area Fire Protection District, Northland Regional Ambulance District and Clay County Park Rangers will be on hand. Earth Riders Trails Association mountain bike group has been invited to talk about the natural trail system the group built on park property. One-mile guided trail hikes will be offered at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., and water and trail snacks will be available. The Smoke & Davey Trailhead is at the Missouri Route W parking lot about 2 miles east of the Route W /U.S. Highway 169 intersection, north of Smithville.
