How close is this year's senior class?
The Bulldogs answered that question with their actions, not words. Six of the seven seniors on the Kearney boys basketball team started at least one home game this season.
That was until the Bulldogs' game Saturday, Feb. 6, in Kearney against Pleasant Hill. Grant Cozad approached the coaching staff about allowing Taylor Cook, the seventh senior, to start in his place.
"As a staff, we thought this was a tremendous display of unselfishness, maturity and what it means to be a true, ultimate teammate," Kearney coach Gary Belcher said. "Never, in my 23 years of coaching and 12 years as a head varsity basketball coach, has a player ever approached me with such a proposition. With kids like Grant and Taylor, it sure makes our jobs as coaches and educators very rewarding."
Cook made the most of his opportunity to start. He scored four of the Bulldogs first six points and finished with six points and six rebounds in Kearney's 68-24 victory.
