A battle of the Bulldogs will determine the Suburban Small Six Conference championship in boys basketball Friday, Feb. 20, in Kearney. That's when Grandview comes to town to take on Kearney in a game of defending state runner-ups.
Kearney, which moved up to No. 2 in this week's Class 4 state polls, comes into the game (the final home game of the season and Senior Night for the host Bulldogs) with a 21-3 overall record and 6-3 mark in the conference. Grandview also stands at 6-3 in the league, so the winner of Friday's game would win at least a share of the Small Six championship.
When the teams hooked up the first time a couple weeks ago, Grandview escaped with a 58-56 victory thanks to a game-winning jumper by R.J. Leverette at the buzzer.
Ruskin is also currently 6-3 in the conference. The Eagles finish the regular season with a game Friday against Staley.
A Ruskin win would forge a tie at the top of the league standings. However, a loss by Ruskin would allow the Kearney-Grandview winner to win the conference title outright.
Friday night will be a big night for Kearney sports. If you're not in Columbia for the State Wrestling Championships, make sure to catch the basketball game, which should tip off at about 7 p.m. !
