Kearney will cash in on $4.44 million of interest-free bond money.

Gov. Jay Nixon announced that $141 million of federal bonds will be interest free for Missouri school districts that have voter-approved bond issuances for construction projects, according to a July 16 press release. Specified amounts of bond money for more than 30 school districts, including Kearney, totaling $141 million will be interest free, the press release states.

Superintendent shares goals, personal life

Dr. William Nicely started July 1 as Kearney School District’s superintendent, replacing Dr. Chris Belcher. Belcher served four years as superintendent before taking the same job in Columbia. Nicely had been superintendent in Leeton School District for five years before coming to Kearney.

As summer school came to a close last week, some students had to “sink or swim” with their homework — literally.

Students in “Survivor Camp” had to paddle cardboard boats across a swimming pool. Only one made it.

Going to school for the first time can be scary for both the child and the parents. In an effort to ease that transition the Kearney R-1 School District started a kindergarten camp, which allows students who qualify for kindergarten enrollment to come during the summer in a more laid back environment.
